Staged Dreams - photography by Ruud van Empel
First glance at Ruud van Empel's work and you think you're looking at photo-realistic paintings. Children gaze directly at you with "ten mile stare", flowers and butterflies that came down directly from fairytale - it has to be imagined, it has to be painting. No?
Amsterdam based Ruud van Empel uses computer to manipulate photos in to staged imaginary landscapes. Each model and object is photographed separately and then combined in photo-collage to create settings only to be found in dreams. It has a painting-like quality to it and touch of surreal, as characters serious expressions contrast to delicious sweetness of "fantasy-land's" tropical paradise.
Ruud van Empel will show 70 of his works in FotoMuseum of Antwerpen from June 28 through October 6, 2013.
